CHAPTER 4

Sakurai Sho came back in the room very irritated and frustrated.

Since his comeback he has developed a real fascination for his father’s companion. What began like a simple crush quickly turned into an endless obsession. He was attracted to him like a magnet and dreamt about him night and day, unable to focus his thoughts about anything else. Though, it was far from the man he was. Perhaps was it only the fact that he was in his hometown again, anyway he ended to think that the man bewitched him. And since he saw him naked in the onsen, it was far worse.

Jun mocked him badly at first then began to fear for his sanity, he never saw his friend craving so much for anything or anyone.

After the scene in the barn, he decided to officially announce his intentions towards him. Ask him to be his companion and steal him from his father when he would come back to the camp with Matsumoto. But tonight, everything went wrong. First, his sister invited the woman he wanted to avoid at all cost, the one who haunted him for so many years. She was still so beautiful, so perfect under her mask of serenity.

She stood there, by her husband’s side and walked to him in a swift move, a smile on her lips.

“Sakurai-san. It’s been a long time.”

“Lady Yuuka. How are you?”

“I am very fine, thank you. My husband is now counsellor of the Emperor for the province.”

“I heard about it. Omedeto.”

“It’s nothing.”

She bowed at him in a fake timidity and Sho wondered how easily he had fallen into her trap. He was young, true, and had never met such a woman. He could now see the way she tried to seduce him and a glimpse at her husband helped him to understand that if she still had this satisfied smile, it was certainly no thanks to him. How many lovers did she take since her wedding? He smirked at the thought. Sho felt suddenly lucky that she rejected him at that time.

“Are you waiting for someone, Brother?” asked his sister as she joined them.

“I have a special guest, true. I hope it doesn’t bother you. By the way, where is Ohno?”

“I didn’t invite him.”

“Why is that?”

“Because he married one of his servant, didn’t you hear it?”

“Vaguely, I just didn’t believe it.”

“You have to believe it, brother. Nowadays, these peasants don’t know how to stay at their place.”

“With nobles like you, no wonder. Excuse me.”

She irritated him, like she always did, she was so snobbish, no one has ever been good enough for her. Her only weakness was Ohno, no wonder that this marriage was so hard to swallow for her.

“So where is your lover?” Smirked Jun.

“He’s not my lover. Not yet. But if everything works as planned, I will propose to him to officially be my companion.”

“Is it not too fast, Sho?”

“Why?”

“One month ago, you didn’t know him and now you’re ready to offer him a place by your side?”

“I...I just want him so bad. Do you get it?”

“So take him.”

“I want him to love me. He’s so pure, so gentle, so perfect, you can’t understand.”

“I perfectly get it. So go on, you have my benediction.”

“Thanks, but I’m looking for my father’s. And something tells me it will not be so simple. He likes him a lot. He’s here, excuse me. Father, I asked to Ninomiya-kun to join us.”

“Sho-kun, you should have not done this.”

He stared at his father, astonished, then her sister walked to them.

“How dare you?”

Sho never raised his hand towards his sister but now he was sincerely tempted by the idea.

“I want you to apologize to him, sister. Ninomiya-san is my guest and you have to respect him.”

“Res...respect him? Are you totally out of mind, brother? He’s our servant and a peasant father’s protected and educated like a pet. Don’t tell me….you didn’t know?”

The sky falling on him wouldn’t have been more violent for the samurai. Who the Hell was this man who dared to deceive him like Yuuka did to him so many years ago? Was he still so naive?

When he turned back to face Ninomiya, this one had vanished and he ran after him furious like never.

“How dare you to make a fool of me in front of my family and my friends?”

“I didn’t. It was not my intention.”

“You used deception on me and believe me you are going to pay for that. I hoped you enjoyed this little game because it’s over. Do you get it?”

He was able to kill him now, he killed a lot of men on the field to defend his honour, why not him who mocked him so well? Yet, he wanted him, he still wanted him madly and now…
He released him and came back to the guests, avoiding his father’s look on purpose.

When the master woke up the next morning, Nino was kneeled on the floor by his side.

“I’m so sorry Master, I didn’t want to embarrass you, Sakurai-san, I will leave your house as soon as possible.”

“Look at me, Kazunari.”

He raised his head and his heart broke when he saw the paleness of his carnation, the tiredness on his face. Was he so preoccupied by his son lately that he even forgot to take care of him? He blamed himself once again and swore to not fail to his duty anymore.

“You have been very reckless with my son even after I warned you. But it’s my fault, I raised you as a son and never treated you like a servant. You have always been my best companion, the son I would have raised. Sho is a hot-tempered man and he’s very proud, self-conscious about his noble condition, plus he’s a fighter...I can’t excuse his behaviour toward you but somehow he’s right. You can’t be his companion, Kazunari.”

“I know Master. My mind knows, my heart just got carried away. But it’s over now, I’ll be cautious and will stay at my place.”

The old man caressed his cheek and after a smile, coughed badly. Nino grabbed a tissue and supported his back, then helped him to lay down on his futon again, some blankets stacked under his head.

“Thanks, my child.”

“I will ask Ohno-sensei to come.”

“Later. Stay by my side.”

Nino nodded and held the man’s hand, waiting for the moment when he finally fell asleep again.

“You’re still here?” hissed the daughter’s master behind his back.

“Excuse me, Kimura-san, the master asked me to…”

“I know. You’re his favourite child. How is he?”

“He’s very tired, I think this dinner exhausted him.”

“This dinner or your outrageous behaviour.”

“I’m sorry.”

“You can be sorry. You can go now, I’ll watch on him.”

“Thank you.”

Nino stood up and took his leave, determinate to ask some advice to Ohno-sensei. He walked to the stables and found Aiba who was cleaning the horses. He grabbed the saddle he used and put it on the animal.

“I didn’t see you yesterday.” Said Aiba

“But I’m quite sure you heard about it.”

“Of course. Sorry.”

“You don’t have to be, you warned me and I didn’t listen to you, I have to apologize.”

“I would have preferred to be wrong.”

“And you? Kimura?”

“He didn’t come to my bedroom last night so I didn’t even had to refuse him.

Nino laughed and after a small wave to him, dragged the horse outside. As he was about to straddle it, he felt two arms surrounding him and a breath on his nape.

“Did you sleep well?”

“...”

“I didn’t. I thought about you, a lot.”

“Excuse me, I’ve got to go. An errand for your father.”

“You could probably do something for me too. After all, you’re the servant of the Sakurai family.”

“I serve your father.”

Nino moved smoothly and managed to climb on the horse. He rode quickly, galloping fast to forget the fact that his house has become a war zone.

Ohno’s household was not far from the Sakurai domain. He lived peacefully in a mill, at the border of the town.

The young man tied his horse at the entrance and knocked at the door.

He bowed to the beautiful woman who opened, her eternal cheerful smile on her face.

“Ohayo Ohno-san.”

“Ohayo Ninomiya-kun, did you want to see Satoshi-san?”

“Yes, is he at home?”

She smirked nicely and stepped back to let him enter the house.

“He’s fishing, ne?”

“You guessed right. You know, I tend to think that he chose to live in this mill only for the river.”

“He’s a quiet man, fishery suits him well.”

“He will come back very soon, would you like a tea?”

“Yes, please.”

He sat at the table and she boiled water. Nino observed her, so graceful, so cute, no wonder Ohno-sensei fell for her.

“You are lucky.” murmured Nino.

“What?”

“You sounds to be happy, Erika-chan.”

“I guess I am, yes. Even if...Nino-chan? May I ask you a question?”

“Of course.”

“Did you ever had the sensation to be out of place?”

“All the time.”

“So perhaps could you understand my position. Satoshi’s position. Sometimes I wonder if I was right to marry him, sometimes I think that if I was not here he could return to his family.”

“But he will not be happier.”

“He’s an outcast because of me.”

“Perhaps am I wrong, but I rather think that thanks to you, he leads the life he had always wanted to lead.”

“You are a good man.”

“Tadaima.”

“Okaeri.”

The woman stood up and walked to her husband, taking his bag and his coat, her gloomy face suddenly beaming from happiness. He stole a kiss making her giggle and Nino thought about the freedom he gained by wedding her.

He was an exceptional man, really and he realized how much he had hoped that Sakurai was this kind of man.

“Nino-chan, how are you?”

“I’m fine, thanks a lot, Ohno-sensei.”

“Erika kept you company?”

“Yes she did.”

“How is Sakurai-san?”

“He spat blood this morning again. I’m worried to be true.”

“Kimura-san will not let me examine him. By day, at least. I’ll visit him tonight.”

“Thanks Sensei.”

“You’re welcome. By the way, I heard Sakurai son came back home?”

“He came back with a friend.”

“And why suddenly? He decided to leave the Emperor’s side?”

“I’m afraid it’s because of me, I wrote a letter to him saying I was worried about his father’s health.”

“You were right. They are all so proud in that family...”

“I don’t know, he’s very upset now because of me. He thinks I deceived him.”

“Proud like I said. And Sho is the worst of them. But he’s sincere and he can fight till death for a cause.”

“I have to take my leave, Sensei. I will wait for you at the barn.”

“Count on me.”

Nino left the doctor’s house, somehow relieved, and decided to make a detour by the all near village to give a lesson to Hiro. He neglected him too often lately and he feared that Madam enjoyed his absence to bully him more than usual.

He found him as he was feeding the pork and the boy ran to him immediately.

“Ninomiya-san! I’m so happy to see you.”

“Me too, Hiro, come here, I can’t see your face, you’re too dirty.”

Nino cleaned his face with a bucket of water.

“What did she do to you?”
Under the mud, a bruise appeared on his shoulder and Nino sighed loudly. “I forbade her to beat you.”

“Madam didn’t beat me, it’s a birthmark I always had.”

“Oh sorry.”

“She never beats me now, she treats me well.”

“Good to hear. Now…”

Nino grabbed a book in his bag and for the very first time wondered if he really helped Hiro by learning him how to read. Offering him some dreams of freedom, an illusion of freedom when he perfectly knew how it will be hard for him to walk away from this life of misery.

“Would you like to play?”
Smirked Nino putting the book in his bag back.

“No reading?”

“No lesson today. Let’s just play, ne?”

The boy nodded joyfully and they played for a moment on the backcourt to throw stones in a bucket.

He came back at the big House by the beginning of the afternoon when the master usually woke up and managed to avoid the man he feared now so much. If the master was not here, he would have already quit his place to find another one. There were a lot of House nearby which could employ him, like Ikuta’s. The son, who appreciated him, had two children and Nino often gave lessons to them, he would surely be happy to be his new employer.

This night Matsumoto dragged Sakurai to the brothel he wanted to visit since his arrival in town. He didn’t recognize his friend who was always so composed, so self-controlled. This Ninomiya was driving him crazy and the sexual abstinence he imposed to himself since their encounter was surely the reason.

This outing to the brothel to drink and fuck some girls had sounded like the perfect solution somehow…

“Drink my friend, be my guest.”

“I don’t really feel like drinking, sorry.”

“You don’t feel like drinking, you don’t feel like eating, nor fucking, so what?! Move on…”

“I can’t.”

“I don’t get it. Frankly. You couldn’t have him because you said he was special, your father’s pupil and BAM you discover he’s a plain peasant. Good news! You don’t have to curb yourself, just take him. You’re idealizing him and once he will be in your bed, you will just see how he is like every man you slept with.”

“I still can’t believe he’s a manipulator. He has this cleverness, this pure innocence in the eye…”

“Yeah...you’re not healed. Follow my advice but for now, let’s drink! By the way, I saw your charming step brother, yesterday trying to sneak in Aiba’s bedroom.”

“What did you do in the servant quarter?”

“Nothing particular...but he knows very well the place and believe me, he was not simply passing by.”

“And?”

“He’s his lover.”

“If I was married to my sister, I could assure you that I would look for some comfort elsewhere too. Weird sentence, though...and so?”

“So he ran away and I saw Aiba. He sounded to be relieved.”

“You slept with him?!”

“Not really. A little bit. Hey, kid, another drink.”

“What’s your name?”

“Hiro, Sir. Are you samurais?”

“We were. There are no more samurais.”

“I know, Ninomiya-san told me.”

Jun gazed at Sakurai who smirked bitterly.

“You know Ninomiya well?”

“Yes, Sir. He teaches me how to read, he says that if I want to work in a good House I have to read.”

“Talk to me about it…”

“Hiro! Come here! Stop bothering the clients.”

The child ran away after pouring them two cups of alcohol and the big woman approached them, putting his fat hands full of rings on the table.

“What can I do for you, Gentlemen? Are you looking for a girl, perhaps a boy?”

“Absolutely. Girls, girls. I don’t think that my friend is in boy’s mood tonight, isn’t it?”

“I’m in the mood for no one, Jun. I’ve got to go, but stay.”

“See you later. And behave!”

“Always.

Sho straddled his horse with difficulty but fortunately, this latter was clever enough to bring back home his master even when he was drunk.

When he arrived at the House, he dived his face in a water bucket to sober up and strode determinately to the servant quarter.

Everything was dark and calm and he made his way silently despite his state.

He slid Ninomiya bedroom’s panel and distinguishing his little silhouette on the futon, crouched by his side. He caressed his sleeping face softly and leaned forward to kiss him.

“Sakurai-san?!”

“Hush…”

“Are you drunk?”

“Certainly.”

Once again he tried to take his lips but Nino avoided his mouth smoothly. Sakurai grabbed his wrist and straddled him with a smirk.

“Resist, you’re right, nothing can turn me up like that. You know you can’t escape, so give it up, you will spare my time and yours.”

Nino stopped his movements and gazed at him with disdain.

“Go on, Sakurai-san. Take me and tomorrow morning, I’ll be dead.”

“I’m not gonna kill you.”

“I will rather slide my throat than live after being raped.

They looked at each other for a few seconds and Sakurai flinched slightly, his desire gone.

“Idiot. You should be proud to be desire by a noble.”

“You don’t deserve my respect. You’ll never own your father’s nobility.

Sakurai stood up, suddenly appalled and left the bedroom.
