Summary : “An Angel has the power to pacify a crowd, to convey emotions people ignore. But…when an Angel sings for his master, this man can feel the fullness of body and mind…however, one Angel is made for a Master and only one. And the master can’t choose his Angel.” But when Ninomiya Kazunari, an Angel fated to belong to the ruler of the galaxy chooses the Commandant of the ship designated to guide him to his Master, what will happen to him?
Note: The concept of singing Angel belongs to O.S Card, I borrow it with all the respect due to his huge talent.

CHAPTER 5

“No, Kazunari-kun, you’re wrong!” Shouted Masaki, interjecting between the two men “This is not General Okada! Usui-sensei!”

The fallen Angel asked for help to the Great Intendant, but the old man stood still, staring at the duo seriously. Sakurai finally began to speak.

“Indeed, I’m not the General Okada, I’m Commandant Sakurai and I’m in charge to escort you to the Imperial Court.” Concluded Sho, taking off the two hands of the Angel from his face, a perceptible regret in the eyes. This latter stared at him, confused.

“But Masaki told me…and it’s you, no doubt.”

Masaki grabbed his hand and dragged him away from the soldier who suddenly remembered the presence of his men behind him. If Jun had an ironical look in the eye, the others sounded fascinated by the heavenly apparition. A celestial aura emanated from the little man: luminous and attractive; unexplainable.

The Great Intendant stepped forward at his turn and patted Masaki’s arm soothingly. The Angel seemed totally puzzled.

“You shouldn’t wait too long before the departure, Commandant Sakurai. “ Said the old man, looking at the sky. “Masaki-kun will answer to your questions. I would entrust my life to him.”

“I have no questions, Sensei. I’m a soldier, I received an order, I follow it.”
Said Sho escaping Nino’s gaze, his face once again emotionless.

“I’m sure of it, Commandant. However, I guess the entire thing sounds strange for you and ignorance is the worst counselor. I prepared some food for you and your men. When will you take off?”

“In one hour. My crew is ready. The General was pretty clear when he asked me to do as fast as possible.”

“I bet he was”
murmured the Intendant without smiling.

“Masaki, walk with me, I have to talk to you. Leave Kazunari to the Commandant and his crew. Come into my arms, my child.” He opened his arms and Nino snuggled up into it.

Sho stared at Jun who didn’t understand what was happening just like Sho.

Being noblemen, used to the Court, they already heard about Usui-sensei and the Orchid palace. Yet, by lack of interest or understandings, they never really listened to those stories which sound to be of fairy tales for men raised in the military rigor.

And today, standing at the presence of this pearly palace, they had the feeling of having jumped in a story for children.

“The first Lieutenant Matsumoto will lead you to your suite, Ninomiya-san.” Said the Commandant, bowing politely.

He didn’t want to sound to be troubled and for the moment, the only solution he found was to run away. He bowed once again at the Great Intendant and went back to the ship, pretending to not notice the dumbfounded faces of the crew. It sounded to be a revealing lack of diplomacy and it was so unlike the Baron Sakurai.

“Did I do something wrong?” murmured Nino to the First Lieutenant who approached him.

“Would you follow me, Ninomiya-san?”

He smiled gently but didn’t manage to reassure the Angel who turned once again to the Palace before entering the ship.
He followed Jun passively, only asking when he would have the occasion to meet the man who pleased him so much.

The suite was smaller than his bedroom at the Palace, naturally, but it contained more furniture. The Angel couldn’t say if he liked it or disliked, it didn’t matter for him.

“This is your suite.” Said Jun trying to draw his attention. “Your servant will sleep in the room next to this one.”

Nino sat on the bed, lost in his thoughts.

“I’ll take my leave, you sound to be tired. If you have something to ask, you can-”

“The Commandant Sakurai will come to meet me?”

“I don’t know. He’s very busy.”

The light of hope in his eye immediately disappeared.

Jun bowed and went back to the command post where Sho was. He seemed to be focused on his flight plan but Jun noticed his absent look.

“Surprised?” He whispered, sitting by his side.

“Hm…not really, whoever he is, it’s none of our business.”

The younger had the feeling of hearing his own voice when he talked about Juri. It’s was pretty…relevant.

“Do you think he’s Okada’s lover?”

“I don’t know. What would it change?”

“Nothing, I’m just curious…what will he do once at the Court?”

“He will sing.”
Said a low voice behind their back. They turned back and saw the second passenger entering the room. “Could you lead me to him, please?”

The voice was extremely mastered but the two soldiers could hear all the hidden hostility.

“I show you the way.”

Sho decided to guide himself in order to understand the reason behind his behavior.

“Something bothers you, Aiba-san?”
“As long as you stay far from him, nothing will bother me.”

“Wait! Are you meaning…”

“He’s very attractive, isn’t he? But he’s fated to be with the General Okada.”

Sho felt anger overwhelming him and grabbed Aiba’s arm to force him to face him. But the latter freed himself from the grip and slapped the soldier against the wall, cutting his breath short with one hand on his throat.

“You shouldn’t care about him. You’ll bring him only misery and I’ll do everything in my power to prevent it.”

He released him and without notice, entered the Angel’s suite.

Sho caught his breathe uneasily. The servant could have killed him effortlessly and for a man as trained as him, it was an unusual situation. He has a lot of questions and a very bad feeling about their mission. Discovering the personality of the Angel’s “servant” was enough to confirm this feeling. Sho went back to the Command post where the crew waited for his orders.

He sat at his place and gave the order to Shin to start the engine.

They quickly took flight.

”Kanayoshi?”

“Yes Commandant?”

“We’re going to change course.”

Jun turned to face him, astonished. Sho was a very thoughtful man and to change their course, without warning was totally unexpected.

“Okay, commandant.”

“I sent you the new information. We’ll fly by Gotanda and will go round Togoshi.”

“The area is infested by asteroids. Are you sure?”
Asked Jun calmly.

“It’s an order.”

The conversation was closed. Sho rose and asking Jun to follow him in silent, climbed down to the cruiser's belly.

Juri and Tadayoshi were laid under the Eagles.
Hearing them laughing, Jun would have gladly pulled the tall pilot by the feet.

“Sirs.” Said Sho loudly.

The two pilots immediately went out of the aircraft and stood up.

“We have a situation.”

“Commandant?”

They just took flight and for soldiers used to war zones, this mission sounds to be a pleasure-trip. So found a ‘situation’ could seem exaggerated. Juri knitted her brows and didn’t talk waiting for the Commandant’s explanations. If he took the pain to warn them, they would have a role to play.

“Our guest’s ‘servant’ just nailed me to a wall at one hand, without me being able to notice his movements.”

“Are you saying~”
Began Jun.

“I’m saying he’s a Yamabushi.”

“May I talk, Commandant?”

“Go on, Tadayoshi.”

“Ueno and I flew everywhere in Galaxy, more than we could tell and we never met one. This is a fairy tale, those warrior monks able to kill you with two fingers…”

“I can assure you I never saw that. He didn’t even shake and I’m heavier than him, much more!”

“What does it mean, according you?”
Asked Jun.

“It means we’re going to have problems, very soon. A super equipped cruiser, two Eagles and now a Yamabushi…and the crew is the one we had for our Kobayashi Maru.”

“That’s why you changed our course?”

“It’s the best way to avoid ambushes. And the asteroids along our new road will make it difficult.”

“Who could be a threat?”
Questioned Jun.

“I don’t know but the monk should know…”

“If he won’t talk, forget it, nothing will force him to.”
Cut Juri. “I...An old friend talked to me about one before. Once in mission, they stand firm.”

“Anyway, identifying the threat won’t prevent the attack.”
Added Tadayoshi quietly.

“It’s true. So let’s wish. Let’s wish we’re seeing the devil everywhere, even where there’s nothing to fear. I’m going to warn the Palace that we’ll be late and will explain to Okada once out there. Just…be ready.”

“Got it, Commandant.”

They climbed to the Commandant post and Jun smiled to his friend.

“This journey is definitely full of surprises…”

“Are you enjoying it?”
“An Angel, a monk warrior, two eagles and a road full of asteroids, I'm having a blast.”

“You’re sick…”
But Sho’s laughter reassured Jun.

“Are you gonna visit him?”

“Who?”

“Your Angel.”

“He’s not my Angel, it’s Okada’s.”

“He doesn’t agree with you in that matter. He sounded to be so disappointed when I said you won’t approach him.”

“And why should I have to approach him?”

“Yeah, true, why…maybe because you like him?”

“And? Even if it’s true, what about it?”

“What’s wrong with that?”

“According to his guardian, I won’t approach him, even if I’d wish to, without losing a very significant part of my virility, and believe me or not, I cherish it.”

“Okay, okay…anyway I’d like to hear some explanation about his role once at the Palace.”

“Stop being paranoid, he’s just an artist, he will entertain Okada. That’s all.”

Seeing Jun’s sceptical look, Sho felt a point of jealousy pinching him. Right, it was very improbable with such an arsenal to escort him.

The first day passed very smoothly.

That following night, passing by the guest’s room, the Commandant placed his ear against the door but he didn’t hear a sound. In spite of what he pretended with Jun, he did felt the need to see him once again.

Jun slept with the crew, refusing the room which was assigned to him.

Exiting the Commandant post, he walked to the shower room and ran into Juri and Tadayoshi.

She remained silent, beginning to step back when Matsumoto stopped her, putting his arm on the door.

“I don’t mind sharing the shower. After all, it’s not the first time.”

“No, thanks.”

Passing by him, they headed back to the dormitory.

“And with him, you don’t mind!?”

If Tada had showered with him, he could have accepted a refusal from Juri, she could be shy. But as a matter of fact, he was the only hindrance.

“We’re been living together for 11 years,” Said the pilot. “Why would she be bothered? We know everything about each other.”

Jun swallowed his anger and pushed the button to slide the door open.

When Masaki entered Nino’s room, he was wearing his cheerful servant mask again.
What the questions he perceived could be, he couldn’t answer to Nino. Why should he have worried him? He protected him as he always did since Usui-sensei entrusted him, whatever the danger could be, he will face it. Whatever may happen.

“Masaki!”

“Well, well, my Angel, what happened? You were so enthusiastic this morning, why are you so sad?”

“I know he’s my master, I felt it, like you told me. Why are you against me? Why can’t I see him?”

“I’m not against you and I’ll never be. But that’s not what the Oracles said. Sit down, I’ll tell you.”

Nino did what he was told and Masaki grabbed his hands.

“When Usui-sensei found you, he knew you would be a wonderful Angel and your teachers from the garden and from the House decided he was right. Yet, you probably ignore this: when a child in the House is chosen to be an Angel, the Oracles are reunited to find his Master. This is a divine message, the Goddess talks by their mouth. And they predicted you would be the Angel of the most powerful man of the Galaxy. Do you get it?”

“But they didn’t say it would be General Okada!”

“That’s exactly what they said, Angel.”

“But when I saw him…”

“Enough!” For the very first time since Nino has met Masaki, he was authoritative. “You never left the Palace and you’re troubled, it’s normal, but you will understand when you will meet your Master.”

The guardian has found his lenient voice back.

“I get it.”

The Angel hung his head and Masaki felt a big wave of sadness overwhelming him. There were already damages. But he still had the time to stem the problem and avoid the propagation by enclosing Nino in the bedroom.

“That’s why it’s better to stay here. With me. It’s a beautiful bedroom, isn’t it?”

“I don’t know.”

“This is the Imperial Palace style. Do you want me to tell you the Palace?”

“Why not…”

Nino let Masaki’s voice lull him and he put his head on the guardian’s lap. The latter put his fingers on the boy’s temples and soon the Angel was sleeping deeply.

“How is it, Shin?”

“Fine, Commandant. I'm playing it by ear and I can’t push it more but our tonnage is small enough to pass clear.”

“Very well, keep on like this.”

Since three hours they penetrated the densest asteroid field of the Galaxy. It was a daring but intelligent choice and the crew knew it.

If the Commandant decided to take this risky road, undoubtedly another one would have been worst. They totally trusted him and that’s the reason why the atmosphere was so tense on board. What was the danger if their Commandant preferred flying in the middle of an asteroid field and extending the journey?

“Commandant, we’re approaching Shinagawa.”

“We’re leaving the asteroid field. Kanayoshi-kun, make us disappear from the radars.”

“Okay, Commandant.”

The listener quickly obeyed and soon, their ship vanished from the screen.

“Kanayoshi?”

“Lieutenant?”

“Can you change the radar’s data and search for small tonnage’s ships?”

“I'll do it right now, Lieutenant.”

“What are you looking for?”
asked Sho, approaching the screen.

“Pirates. The biggest part of the Pirates on the Iryia Moon came from this area. They are using old sparrow Hawkes from the previous century to be undetectable.”

“Their hulk should be heavier, right?”

“That’s the point. They are changing the old material for new one, lighter, keeping the power of the engine. Thus they are as fast as Eagles.”

“Okay. Could they fly as far as Shinagawa?”

“For a Federation Cruiser, maybe. For an Imperial vessel, they would think twice about it, but…bingo!”

Matsumoto pointed four little points on the screen.

“That’s it?”

“It seems to be.”

“They don’t sound to be hostile.”

“If this is really pirates, I don’t think they will take the risk. Kanayoshi, decrease the tonnage once again.”

She did what she was told and tons of points appeared on the screen.

“What’s that?”

“I don’t know…but they are approaching.”

“What do we do, Commandant?”
Asked Himoto.

“Ueno, Tadayoshi, Yuta, can you see this?”

On the control screen, the mess where the three soldiers were appeared. They were looking at the transmission too.

“Yes Commandant.”

“Did you see that?”

“We don’t Commandant. But it’s fast. Almost as fast as an Eagle.”

“Could they be a threat?”

“If they were pacifists, they won’t be so many. Plus they are flying in formation, like experimented pilots would do. They are warriors.”
Achieved Juri.

“Himoto, when they are in range of fire, deploy the shield.”

“Okay, Commandant.”

Jun stared at Sho and this latter nodded. That’s what they feared since the departure. The presence of this kind of squadron couldn’t be a mere coincidence.

“Should we begin with a warning shot? The best defense is the attack, we could surprise them.”

It was so Jun-like…

“And if they didn’t intend to attack, they will counterattack. And we’re trying to keep low profile.”

“So we’re waiting?”

“So we’re waiting.”

Time passed slowly in a perfect silence, except the sound of the radar indicating the squadron’s progression right on them.

“Commandant Sakurai, they are in range of fire.”

“Go Himoto, deploy the shield.”

“It’s done.”

Once again, the silence fell. Until the first shot which hit them.

“They are attacking, Commandant.”

Sho gazed at the lightning stroking the shield around the ship. The Baron couldn’t be deceived, it was only the first try, to check their defence.

“They are testing our shield; they are certainly establishing a strategy at this moment. Or they are waiting for orders.”

Some cruisers flew until the stem of the ship.

“They are attacking for good.”

The sudden enemy gunfire rained down on the Imperial cruiser, trying to pierce the shield.

They weren’t amateurs, they were skilled enough to know their type of shield they used was nourished by the fire enemy and became stronger at each attack.

They surely knew that if this shield was attacked in too many places at the same time, it wouldn’t last for too long.

Thus the light squadron, rather than a heavy cruiser, thought Sho bitterly.

“How much time before they shut our shield down, Himoto?”

“One hour if they keep on like that.”

“Could they keep on during one hour?”

“If they take turns, surely.”

“In that case, fire!”

The cruiser shot in their direction, destroying a lot of enemies but new ones just took their place.

The situation was far from good.

Without notice, Masaki was by Sho’s side and was walking around to grasp the problem.

“They won’t cease.” He concluded flatly. “They are mercenaries. Prepared and numerous.”

“You sound to be an expert.”
Hissed Sho, looking at him coldly.

“This is not the first time they are trying to kill him.”

“So how should we proceed?”

“We have to land.”

“On Shinagawa?! This planet is hostile.”

“Space sounds to be a less hostile place, Commandant?”

“Even if, hypothetically, we decide to land, they would follow us and shoot us down once there.”

“Let’s divert their attention.”

“Oi, what does it mean?”

Jun had leaped on his feet.

“I’m simply telling you how you should proceed to keep him alive.”

Sho closed his eyes to organize his thoughts, forgetting the sound outside. The time was flying by so fast…

“Tadayoshi, Ueno, can you hear me?”

“Yes, Commandant.”

“Climb into your Eagles.”

“Yes, Commandant.”

“Shin, prepare an emergency landing.”

Jun glanced at Sho and left the Command post. He ran to the belly of the ship and spotted Okura as he was sitting, Juri was on the side, climbing into her Eagle.

“Juri!”

She turned back and he rushed to her. She smiled.

“You came to say good bye?”

“Stop it! It’s suicide, don’t go!”

Her face saddened and she froze. She stared at her companion who looked elsewhere decently. Juri leaned on Jun and put her lips on his, striking him down. He didn’t expect this. This warmth, this sweetness and his heart ready to explode…she stepped back and murmured at his ear:

“I won’t let them hurt you.”

She jumped into the ship and the door slid on an end of the world scenery.

Jun watched the two eagles take off, rush to the fray, and soon they flew under the enemies’ fire.
