CHAPTER 3

Sho was laying on his stomach, his eyes on the slim silhouette by his side, his heart pounding madly in his chest. He raised his gaze and met Yuriko’s eyes. She brushed lightly Nino’s hair and he smiled in his sleep.

“He’s handsome.” hushed Sho and she nodded. “It was madness Yu.”

“I know.”

“It will never ever happen again, it’s too painful.”

“You made love to him.”

“And he made love to you, we’re just squaring the circle. I think that we shouldn't talk about it either. We’ll forget it and in a few months, it will be like a dream we made.”

“We’ll never forget.”

“I’ll do. He’s not gay and never will be Yu. We’re not in a drama or in a novel, people can’t struggle against their nature.”

“This night was great.”

“Only because it’s a one night stand.”

“It could be more.”

“Like what?”

“I could have you and you could have him if we’d stay together, the three of us.”

“You’re crazy.”

“Who said love was a couple matter? We’re the perfect example that it’s not the case. I love you, both of you. We could make him happy.”

“And I love you too, but he loves you, only you.”

“You’re his best friend.”

“And that’s enough. He should not know. Never. There’s no point to it.”

She didn’t add anything and just watched him standing up, picking up his clothes and leaving the bedroom.

“We have to run after him.” says Yuriko grabbing Sho’s keys.

“Leave him alone, it’s hard for him. He needs time to think about it. Sit down.”

She sits on the couch and grabs her knees, placing her chin on them.

The silence falls between the two of them and he stands to light a cigarette, reaching out to check his cell phone.

“I’m sending a mail to Satoshi to tell I can’t come to the ryokan for now.”

“Satoshi?”

“Ohno-san.”

“Do you think he was serious?”

“Nino? Yeah he was.”

“I guess...he’s right. I didn’t have the right to condemn him to live with me.”

“Oh God, Yuriko please, don’t do that. He was happy to marry you and you never lied to him.”

“Lying and not telling the entire truth are two different things.”

Sho sits on the low table and takes her hand in his, gazing at her straightforwardly.

“Why...why did you never accept to live a real marital life with him?”

“It’s complicated Sho. And it’s our story, for Nino and I.”

“Okay.” He sighs, stands up and goes to the kitchen to drink a glass of water “But now it’s yours, only yours.”

She hangs her head and lies down on the couch, turning her face against the back to hide her face.

“We’ll pick Satoshi up tomorrow morning and will go back in town. Try to take a rest. Tomorrow is another day.”

Ohno gets into the car without a word about the catastrophic night, or the fact that Nino vanished, leaving his wife behind him, or even about Yuriko’s puffing eyes.

They didn’t sleep at all but they barely talked, too thunderstruck to react.

Everything turned suddenly so wrong as if the time of a night their entire life has been ruined.

Sho leaves Ohno at his place and drives Yuriko at home by the end of the day. She tried to reach him all day long with Sho’s mobile but he never answered and she’s not really surprised. Nino is very proud, stubborn and now more hurt than ever, he’s not able to hear her apologies, not for the moment.

Nothing changed in the house, after all, only one day passed since the hurricane. Yuriko wanders from a room to another as if she’s discovering it for the first time, as if she’s looking at it for the last time.

“Yu?” Calls the teacher’s voice.

She comes back to the living room where Sho is sitting. In front of him on the low table, several blue sheets he points to her.

“I see…he really did it.”

She sits next to him and grips the papers, skimming it quickly, noticing that Nino already signed it.

“He’s always so quick to react.” She says in a whisper.

“I’m gonna talk to him, if he could accept to take the time to think about it, he could change his mind.”

“That’s precisely the reason why he doesn’t want to wait. He always says that the best decision is the one he could take in a blink of eye.”

“Like your marriage?”

“I guess sometimes there’s a failure in his system.”

“What are you doing?” Says Sho as she opens her big tote bag.

“I’m looking for my seal.”

“Take your time, there’s no need to rush.”

“I owe him.”

She signs and seals it then stands up already putting her shoes on.

“Are you ready?” She says grabbing her bag.

“You...seriously? You leave the house like that? And your stuff? Your piece of work?”

“I don’t need it.”

“But…”

“Don’t. Please. Don’t say a word. This house has never really been mine, you know.”

Sho smiles the best as he can, not deceived by the brave face of his friend and stands up at his turn. For the first time, as he closes the door behind him, he realizes that he’s a total stranger to her couple life. Nino and Yuriko surely shared a lot of things he ignores and he’s violently hit by the feeling of a huge failure. A total waste he somehow took part.

“It’s here, close your eyes.”

She smiled, hearing the joyful tone in his husband voice.

“What kind of surprise is it?”

“You're gonna love it! Close your eyes, please.”

Yuriko did what she was told and after five minutes Nino stopped the car and opened the door. He took her hand and held her waist to drag her to the surprise.

“Tada!”

She raised her eyes and looked the splendid house in front of her.

“This is our new house.”

He took her in his embrace, putting his chin on her shoulder.

“You’re crazy, our apartment is big enough for the two of us, we don’t need…”

“Hush. Come in, the surprise is inside.”

He took her in his arms, making her scream and they entered the house.

“That’s how we’re supposed to pass the threshold of our house.”

“Let me down, please.”

He let her down but held her hand tight to drag her behind him into the numerous rooms -the kitchen, the living room, the sauna, the gym room, the guest rooms, Sho’s room- until the great finally, Yuriko’s studio.

“You could work here. There are huge windows and all the room you need for your furniture. Are you happy?”

She wanted to say something, so many things in fact. That she didn’t need to be spoiled to be happy, that she will miss the intimacy they shared in their little apartment, that she didn’t want a huge house if it means that her husband have to be absent 10 months per year. But he sounded to be so happy.

“Yeah, I am.”

Two days later they moved in and the next week Nino left for almost a month for a championship in a foreign country.

“So this is your new mansion, Lady Ninomiya?”

“Don’t mock me, Sho, every day I lose my way because of the many rooms. I decided to draw a map.”

“Where is the kitchen?”

“This way.”

She pointed the left corridor and they went to the kitchen where Sho boiled water in order to make a tea.

“So tell me.”

“What? The house?”

“Yeah, the house.”

“It had always been his dream. To own such a mansion. He’s so happy.”

“He didn’t have money when he was young, it’s a consecration for him. And it’s for you, to make you happy.”

“I know. That’s why I can’t tell him how much I don’t care. We were great in our flat, it was small enough to learn to know each other. I never had money either, but I don’t need it to live a peaceful life.”

“You should tell him that.”

“I can’t. But …one day perhaps.”

Sho reached out and stroked her hand gently. She could be so secretive sometimes. She never talked about her past life, her childhood, about her real feelings, he sincerely hoped she had found a confidant in Nino.

“Don’t wait too much. He’s your husband after all, if you can’t tell him the truth, to whom will you do?”

“To you, my friend?”

An awkward silence fell between them and they sipped their tea quietly.

“And your job at the university?” Asked the newlywed.

“Great. The students are great. I planned to write a theatre piece with them. They will play it by the end of the years. Or next year perhaps, it’s a kind of long shot project…”

“And did you find someone?”

“Not really.”

“Sho…you deserve to meet someone.”

Sho laughed joyously.

“Because not everybody deserves to meet someone?”

“You know what I mean.”

“I guess, yeah…”

“Someone who will make you smile and will share your feelings.”

“It’s not really planned now, you know...a first love is hard to forget. But who cares? And your art projects?”

“I began to use the studio. A school offered me a job but now…”

“Now?”

“I have to focus on my work here. With such a place I can’t do differently.”

“If you’re okay with it…”

“I am.”

She waited for him at home, a meal ready to be warmed in the oven she never used before. She wore one of those girly dresses Nino insisted to buy for her. He was surely tired and stressed after this travel.

“Tadaima!”

“Welcome home! I’m here.” She said with a voice she wanted to be joyful from the kitchen.

“Are you cooking?” Said Nino pecking her cheek.

“I’m warming a meal I bought in a shop. I won’t poison you, don’t worry.”

“I’ll eat everything you cook. What are you drinking?”

“White wine. Do you want some?”

“Not really. I’m too tired to drink. I'll take a shower and you’ll tell me how your life is in the new house, okay?”

“Okay.”

She placed everything on the table and he came back after half an hour, wearing a pair of jeans and a T-shirt, his hair still wet. They sat on the floor like they used to do, even if they seemed to be out of place with such an enormous table next to them.

“Did you miss me?” He said with a smile.

“Hm.”

“It was long for me too, even if I didn’t have the time to get bored. Canada is really a wonderful place, next time you’ll come with me, I saw a lot of sign with museum written on it…”

She stared at him as he told her the travel, the people he met, he was so enthusiastic, so joyful and self-confident, everything she wasn’t. Nino’s parents were poor, true, but nice and caring, he had so much chance. Every day she wondered why he was so madly in love with her.

“Are you tired?”

He was gazing at her with a smile.

“Hm? Why?”

“You’re spacing out. I will not ask you to repeat what I told you, I know you couldn’t.”

“Sorry. Go on, I’ll listen to you. I was thinking about a sculpture I began this week, I had an idea and…It’s pretty obsessing, you know how my mind works.”

“And you want to work on it right now. Go back to your studio, I get it. I’ll follow you, just some phone calls and I’ll be there.”

“Okay.”

She turned on the dimmed light and made rolling the potter’s wheel where the woman in clay was waiting for her. Her skinny legs joined and her cheek on her knees, curled on herself, the curve of her back calling the caress. The woman in clay sounded to be so fragile, so desperately and derisorily trying to protect herself.

She grabbed a piece of clay and warmed it into her hands, then sat on the high chair. Like always, she didn’t notice the time flying by and when the door opened behind her, she heard a soft laughter.

She turned back to look at her husband and noticed the clay on her dress, the way she pulled it high on her thighs without even realizing. Crap. The beautiful dress was a total mess...

He stood by her side and turned the potter’s wheel delicately.

“Why a woman again?”

“They are...soft, round, sweet, more inspiring for me.”

“Perhaps one day I’ll try.”

“You definitely should!”

“No...It’s not my stuff.”

He gazed at her intensively and she stroked his cheek, spreading the clay all over his face, a malicious smile adorning her face.

“It’s funny?” Said the man, a strange light in the eye.

“Yeah really.”

Nino rubbed his hands with a piece of clay and as he leaned forward, spread it on Yuriko’s thighs. She thrilled and screamed.

“It’s cold, idiot!”

He put his hands on her hips to attract her to him. He pecked her nose, then her cheeks and finally her lips. A gentle kiss at first, quickly stronger and he grabbed her thighs to carry her to the wall. She let him do, enjoying the caress until the moment he began to rub his hard manhood against her lower belly.

“Nino please, stop.”

He kissed her neck, his hands opening the dress hastily and she froze against him, totally paralyzed.

“Yuriko, baby?”

“I’m so sorry...I can’t.”

Nino loosened his grip on her legs and stepped back, suddenly dampened.

“I thought that maybe we have to wait to be in our new house, perhaps you were shy somehow…”

“I’m sorry, if I could, I’ll…”

“When will you accept?” Exploded Nino.

“...I don’t know.”

Nino left the room and she slept for the first time in her studio. Unfortunately it was not the last.
