CHAPTER 6

First thing at work the next morning I try to call our man, several times, but he doesn’t answer. I have a bad feeling…
And if the killer found him?
Yet, there’s no new corpse and we try once again the Nazis bar. He’s nowhere to be seen and I can’t be insistent or he will be definitely grilled.
We come back to the station and we’re sending a wanted but I don’t really have any hope, this guy should be used to disappear. It’s only when I go back home by the end of the day that my phone rings. And it’s not the man I expected.

“Matsumoto-kun?”
“Ninomiya?”
“Are you free?”
“When?”
“Now, please.”
“Sho is at the university.”
“I know but I need you, Satoshi has been aggressed.”
“I’m on my way.”

He’s seriously freaking out. I send a mail to Juri-san to warn her that I’ll be late and I head to the Dante.
The club sounds to be a theatre set by day. The study’s door is wide open and I knock then push it.
Ohno is laid on the couch and sleeps peacefully despite the bruises and the injuries on his face. Nino grips my arm and drags me outside to a kitchen where he makes a coffee.
His movements are clumsy and I clearly read on his face the so characteristic insecurity of the victims.

“Coffee?”
“I’ll do it. Sit down.”
“Thanks.”

He smiles to me and sits on a chair.

“He came back home like that.”
“He disappeared?”
“We used to sleep by day and when I woke up at the beginning of the afternoon he had left the apartment. I knew something happened.”
“He could have been shopping?”
“If I didn’t ask him to or give him the permission, impossible.”
“True…I forgot.”
“He came back two hours ago and he was so…messed up.”
“Who did this?”
“This fucking Nazis.”
“The group?”
“Yeah. This fucking bastards with their reptilian brains. He said he heard some noise into the club this morning and he found them as they were vandalizing it. They dragged him outside and bashed him up.”
“Did you go to the hospital?”
“We didn’t , excuse me but it’s not a reflex for us. Doctors aren’t comfortable with our habits.”

He reaches out and with his finger removes the scarf around my neck, exposing the marks Sho did to me. He raises an eyebrow and puts the scarf back without a word.

“I ask to a doctor I know well to come at the club. He has several ribs broken and he stitched him out but fortunately, the guys of the club found him. It could have been far worse.”
“You have to file a complaint.”
“In a perfect world, surely.”
“They wrecked your club, beat up your companion and they surely have been raped if no one helped him.”
He hangs the head and whispers a “I know.”
“So do what you have to do to fix the problem. I’ll come with you.”
“If you’re with me your colleagues will gossip.”
“I don’t give a shit, it’s not my problem.”
“I like you.”
“Thanks…I think…what were they looked for?”
“At the club?”
“Yeah, they didn’t come only to wreck your club, so what were they looked for?”
“They searched for someone.”
“Who?”
“What do you think?”

The image of the guy with the rat face pops immediately in my mind. Looking for a shelter in this club makes sense somehow.

“Is he still here?”
“Yeah, sure. Satoshi didn’t say anything. We’re not used to rat out someone who asked for our help.”
“Even this kind of person?”
“We don’t judge him. Everyone has to deal with his own shit.”
“May I talk to him?”
“I call him.”

He stands up and a few minutes after, the guy is at the door. He’s avoiding my gaze like those men who felt guilty for some reason.

“I called you all day long, why didn’t you answer?”
“Did you send them?”
“Who?”
“The bullies.”
“What’s with that?”
“They said to Ohno that someone told them. I spoke to you only.”
“Wait, wait, sit down, since the beginning, please.”
“Yesterday, I came here after talking to you and they found me immediately.”
“And I tell you it has nothing to do with me.”

Nino lends him a chair.

“It’s not Matsumoto-san, I know him and what would be the point to him?”
“Perhaps is it a point, precisely.”
“Explain.”

The other closes his mouth and keeps his eyes on Nino.

“What happened between the four of you?”
“The four of us?”
“The senator, Take, Kume and you? They are dead and you think you’re the next on the list, so what’s the link between you? If it’s the group, the next one could be anyone, so what shared you?”
“We had an accident.”
“An accident?”
“The Senator came to one of our meeting and Kume was with him. When it has been done he proposed to join him, Take and me, at the Dante for having fun.”
“Take and you?”
“We were more or less together.”
“I see. A party at the Dante, Nino?”
“We’re organizing parties with a theme once or twice by month. The clients can create some kind of connexion.”
“What kind of connexion?”
“Relationship connexion. Politics, bankers, some big contracts are sealed during those parties. People are coming from everywhere.”
“Not only SM?”
“Not only SM. People with opened moral standards but not only BDSM.”

The sole idea of those big politician or financial bosses together in those orgies makes me sick. Even if for once, it’s a huge step forward for the investigation.

“And?”
“Take proposed to drive us after and we were pretty smashed, him too. We didn’t see a bicycle on the side of the road.”
“You hit someone?”
“Yeah, we hit her hard. We stopped to see if there was something to do, but she was already dead.”
“What did you do?”
“We…hide her in a bush with the bike and we ran away. We couldn’t call the police and she was already dead, what could we do?”
“Anonym call perhaps?”
“The next day we saw on TV that a wanted was send for her, so I did this phone call. That’s how they found her.”
“And you’re thinking that’s because of this accident that someone is killing you?”
“Kume can’t get through it. He told me that he called the husband to explain that it was a ain accident and that there were nothing to do. He apologized.”
“He surely made his day.”
“I know it’s unforgivable. I did a lot of bullshit in my life but it’s certainly the worse.”

He sounds to relax, as if this confession helped him to find some relief.

“When was that?”
“November, the 12. I perfectly remember it.”

I swallow painfully and stare at Ninomiya to ask him a support he can’t offer.

“Stay here tonight, I come back tomorrow morning to drive you to the station. Nino too. Satoshi will join us.”
“And the killer?”
“I take care of him.”

I exit of the club and when I finally reach my car, I take my head in my hands. Finally the puzzles is complete.
I start the engine and drive through the city as fast as I can.

“Open!!” I knock madly at the door and it opens by itself.

I walk slowly, take out my gun and point him. The entire apartment is in the dark and when I set a foot in the living room he turns a light. My colleague is sitting on an armchair, his gun by his side and on the low table in front of him a picture of his wife.

“So…you finally understood?”
“Eita…”

I can’t drop my gun, I have the feeling that he’s a stranger in front of me.

“They killed my wife...those pigs. She was on her way from the hospital after her night shift and they threw her on the side of the road, like a dog after killing her.”

I sit quietly and disarm my gun. He hangs his head and I face a broken man.

“I know what you’re thinking, Jun, but they deserved it.”
“They didn’t all kill Aiko.”
“It’s the same thing! They were all fucking Nazis or rapists, they deserved what I’ve done to them and ten times more. This is justice.”
“You didn’t have to make justice by yourself.”
“But you know they would never have seen the walls of a prison!”

He’s right, I saw too many cases abandoned because of some big financial or political pressure. I know that he’s gonna be killed for what he did to them too.

“You have to run away.”
“What’s the point?”
“Because if you’re arrested, you will be condemned to death.”
“I know.”
“So, go to a foreign country, let them forgetting you, I will nevertalk.”
“I can’t Jun, it’s too late.”
“You don’t have any choice!”
“I’m dead the day Aiko died. I’m just a walking dead and what I’ve done since…”

I kneel in front of him and try to shake him in vain.

“Fuck! You don’t want to move, but I swear to you that tonight you will be on a boat, willingly or not. I won’t let you die! I know someone who can help you.”

I run to his bedroom and grab a bag.

“This guy, with the rat face will talk to the mass media, everybody will know what kind of men they were and after a few months, you will come back. I swear.”
“Really?” he said from the living room.
“I’m sure of it. And you will enjoy the trip, since years we promised to each other to travel in the USA. It’s your chance.”
“Jun?”
“Yeah?”
“Thanks for everything.”

Fuck.
I run to the living room but it’s too late. I hear my own scream but I can’t save him anymore. His body falls on the floor and I try to catch him, still hoping despite the obviousness. But he didn’t leave me the slightest chance and he’s barely recognizable.
I don’t know how many times passed before our colleagues found us, warned by the neighbours. When Sho comes at the hospital he says that I’ve been in this state during several hours, holding my friend’s hand and that they had to force me to release my grip.
In silence, he undresses me and cleans the blood on my skin, then rock me all night long until the moment I finally fall asleep.
The next morning I drive the rat guy to Nagase.
I know the truth will be known soon and despite the fact that I don’t want to soil my friend’s memory, I can’t do differently.
The day of his burial, I hold Sho’s hand strongly and I realize that if someone would take him from me, I surely be able to do what Eita did to these men. Love is not fair, not reasonable and is like nothing else, Sho taught it to me. Nino and Ohno are here too and after the ceremony they come home with us. We’re sitting around the low table and I ask to Masaki to prepare a tea.
“We’re closing the Dante.” Says Nino, stroking Ohno’s cheek. Sho doesn’t seem to be surprised and I get the fact that after the aggression he’s afraid for Satoshi.
But I’m not worry for them, they are strong…

That's all folks! See you soon ^@^
