CHAPTER 3
THE MISSION
It was barely 6 am when Sho found himself on the sidewalk in front of the house of the clan, waiting for his brother. He lighted himself a cigarette and while he was inhaling the first puff, Nino entered his field of vision. He always wore this characteristic little smirk on his face and Sho smiled in return. Without knowing how and why, Sho admitted he felt admiration for the man. He was smart, even if he was secretive, as if every little word he spoke had been properly thought and weighted. Each man of the family acknowledged his qualities and the only real question was why didn’t he take his freedom to create a new branch of the clan.
“Hello.”
“Hello, Ninomiya-san.”
“Did you sleep well?”
“Yeah thanks and you?”
“Are you really interested?”
“Hm…,” Sho stuttered, embarrassed by Nino’s cocky gaze.
“Don’t care, let’s go…”
Nino shook the ring key he had in the hand and strode through the road to get into a black big car parked along the sidewalk. Sho took place by his side and they drove to Shinjuku. It had been days since they began to shadow the new Police Chief and they willingly admitted between them that it wasn’t the most tiring job they had to do.
The first day, Nino dragged Sho into a crappy building, totally unknown, which had an insanely narrow and dirty bar. A chubby faced man wearing a filthy suit was alone at a table.
“Long time no see, Nino…”
“It’s been a long time indeed, Officer Hokura.”
“You wanna talk? Is it a new guy?” the man asked, pointing at Sho who just sat down next to Nino on the bench.
“He’s my shatei.”
“No way! Seems you get yourself promoted.”
“Everybody tell me that same bullshit, what's so surprising about it?”
Sho smiled, brushing his hair graciously and the other sent him an appreciative look.
“You know why I’m here?” Nino snapped his fingers to catch the man’s attention, annoyed.
“More or less…the newbie?” the policeman asked, taking a sip of beer.
“Yeah, the newbie. What can you tell me about him?”
“Not that much, he’s a kid. He comes from Osaka, like head of the class, he thinks he’s a kind of wonder. Articles of law stuck on his forehead and a stick in the ass, if you know what I mean…”
“I see. Things will change for sure.”
“I’m not that sure,” the policeman mumbled, fetching a package of cigarette from his pocket.
“What do you mean?”
“What I mean is that they didn’t chose a kiddo for nothing. His good will won’t be enough, he can’t be everywhere and most of us are working with you guys. Old habits die hard and he won’t have the guts.”
“For the time being he can be a hurdle,” Nino smirked, grabbing Sho’s cigarette to take a puff.
“Still cautious, Nino?”
“It’s the only way to be prepared for every shit that happens all the time, you should know that.”
“Not wrong, anyway, I can tell you won’t find anything to dig into. The guy doesn’t smoke, drink, he’s not married and I’m not even sure he’s into pussies.”
“Where does he live?”
“Didn’t tell. You’re alone on that.”
“To recap, we got a kid who does nothing but his work?”
“To recap, yeah.”
“We’re in deep shit,” Nino groaned, crushing his cigarette.
“To recap, yeah,” the policeman repeated, his smile showing a toothless mouth.
“We’ll have to dig,” Nino stood up, put back his hat on and Sho on his heel to return to the headquarters.
The next day, they spent most of the day at the police station, pretending to be victims of a pick-pocket, observing the movements of their target. He showed himself at the reception desk and the two yakuza were quite surprised to see their opponent for the very first time. Not that tall, not that impressive, pretty boy with strong features, no wondered he had hard time to enforce his authority. Short hair, not a smile, no sense of humor. A real machine. When he finally exited the police station by the end of the day to go back home, they followed him to Shinjuku.
“This is the guest house Yokota! The owner is an old lady, her husband died during the last war. She rents a part of the house since then,” Sho explained.
“You’ve been here before?” Nino asked surprised.
“I live here.”
“So you’re super cop’s neighbor?”
“Seems so.”
“Did you come across him before?”
“No, but he arrived a few weeks ago after all.”
“True…anyway, we stuck to his ass.”
And without fail, they came back for the next 15 days, following the man like a shadow, taking note of every movement he made. Seeing him leaving the guesthouse at 7.25 am like each day, Nino exploded.
“I can’t take it anymore!”
“Why?”
“He’s worse than our Kashira. He eats the same fucking udon every day at the very same fucking hour, does he have a fucking clock in the belly?!”
“Well it’s good news, right?” Sho stated calmly. “Someone so predictable.”
“Yeah, but what can we find out about this fucking machine?! We’ll meet Madam and tell her he wakes up every day at 6.30, exits the house at 7.25, eats at 1 pm, returns home at 7.10 and takes a stroll before going to bed at 8.45? It’s damn boring! And we’re gonna get us killed if we have nothing.”
Sho shrugged and pouted, putting his hands into his pockets. “Perhaps could we…don’t know…talk to him? We could learn something about him.”
Nino smiled luminously, suddenly agitated. “You know, it’s not that dumb. It’s a fucking good idea, let’s do this!”
That very same evening, they were wandering in the small park where the policeman walked every day. As expected, he came in at the usual hour. The two yakuza were sitting on the bench he used to take and they pretended to be talking while the guy was approaching them. Matsumoto passed by and then sat down onto the bench. Sho smiled gently and Nino offered a cigarette to the policeman. The latter refused politely.
“Good evening,” Matsumoto began. “Are you living in the neighborhood?”
“My friend, yes,” Nino answered, amused by the nature of the man who he couldn’t help but investigated.
“I never met you before.”
“Me neither,” Sho argued wisely. “Did you just arrived?”
“Yes, I’m from Osaka, here since a few weeks only.”
“Damn huge change!” Sho laughed.
“A bit but I’m living in a guesthouse, I’m not alone.”
Nino was startled by Sho’s intelligence, Matsumoto was talking to him so easily.
“You should rest at Yokota-san’s house!”
“Indeed, do you know her?” Matsumoto’s gaze changed suddenly, he was agitated now.
“She’s like family to me.”
“So…May I ask you a question?” The policeman asked awkwardly.
“’Course, between neighbors we have to help each other.”
“Well, the day I arrived I met a young lady.”
“Oh…”
“Yes, well, she was teaching the children here, she was wearing a traditional Korean dress, does it ring a bell?”
“More or less…,” Sho muttered enigmatically.
“She works all day, I can’t look for her during that time. Every evening I come here, into the park, hoping I could meet her. She told me she lives in the neighborhood but Yokota-san refuses to tell me where I can find her.”
“Do you know her name?” Nino asked.
“Hm, yes, Sakurai Mee-na.”
“Never heard of her,” Nino pouted, observing his shatei attentively. The latter was looking elsewhere and didn’t react. “But if I meet her, I’ll tell you. Yokota guest house, right?”
“Right. I guess she won’t show up tonight either, I’ll go back home. Good night, gentlemen.”
“Good night,” the two men answered in unison.
Nino exulted. It was his damn chance. “Do tell me,” he commanded to Sho.
“What?”
“Who’s the girl? Korean, Sakurai, living in Shinjuku…do I have to punch you or will you tell me now?”
“I…okay, come with me,” Sho said with a sigh.
Nino disliked the way he avoided the question but he was too damn curious to refuse, too curious to see this Korean girl he dreamed so much about once again.
Sho entered a narrow street. Some dogs were barking, children were playing outside peacefully. It was a residential area, poor but clean. Sho pushed a small outside door, red, where a sign both in Japanese and Hangul was hanging. He opened the door of the house and Nino smelled the wonderful flower odor penetrating his nostrils. The sudden memory of that morning when he came across the beauty in front of the headquarters made him blushed. The house was neat and small but felt incredibly warm.
“I’m home,” Sho said, hanging his jacket behind the door.
“Oh, welcome home, Oppa.”
So that was her voice, thought Nino, moved even if he didn’t see her yet. But he knew, intimately that it was her. Fate was such a cruel gambler to put her on his way once again, thought Nino, and he froze when his shatei was already with the woman.
“I brought along a friend, sister,” so they were siblings, Nino sighed with relief.
“You should have warned me! Good evening, I’m Sakurai Mee-na.”
She was facing her guest and bowed politely. Yes, she was the girl. Her eyes, her sweet face, the two charming dimples, her grace…Nino blushed a bit more while he remembered the very indecent image of the girl popping up in his mind each time when he was fucking the Madam.
“Oh…hm…I’m Ninomiya Kazunari. But everybody call me Nino.”
“Nice to meet you. Did you meet my brother at the factory? Will you have dinner with us?” she was smiling luminously and the young man could only nod before catching Sho’s gaze just behind the girl. “I’ll add a bowl or two.”
She wasn’t wearing the Korean dress but a long skirt and a cotton blouse. Nino never saw anything so pretty in his life, he was sure about it. Then he remembered why he was here…the cop, the cop…
Raising his gaze, he read a harsh reprobation in Sho’s eyes but he knew he wouldn’t say a word since he was his superior. Now that they were side by side, Nino couldn’t miss the similarities. Not their face, no, but their luminous aura.
Perfect. She was perfect. He sat down, hiding with difficulties a smile. The smile of a man who found an oasis after years of thirst.
=+=
“Nothing.”
“I don’t understand.”
“There’s nothing to tell about this man. He has nothing to hide, he never meets anyone but his colleagues, so dull…”
“I can’t say that I’m happy, Nino” she grabbed her cigarette with a trembling hand.
At the desk, the Saiko-komon was sitting, lost in his thoughts, while his son was watching outside, his hand at his back. Nino was not comfortable despite his cocky look…facing them and admitting that he failed lamentably was highly dangerous. Lying wasn’t really a problem. It was more than a second nature for Nino, a real talent and he challenged anyone to find the slightest change in his voice while he announced that the cop wasn’t interested by any girl.
“The meeting is tomorrow?” the older man asked the Oyabun’s wife.
“Yes, too late to involve the Kansai’s squadron.”
“Of course.”
“Why don’t we send him Ohno to scare him a bit?”
“Let’s wait, we don’t know what he’s made of. We’ll meet him officially tomorrow, the old Chief isn’t completely retired yet. Shun-kun, what do you think?”
The Kashira slowly turned around, a smile adorning his face, keeping his hands in his back and stared intensely at the two yakuza facing the desk. Sho crossed his gaze and froze, unable to avoid this angelic smile.
“I think we should let him come to the meeting and be honorable hosts. No need to use the hard way right on the bat, we’ll think about sending Ohno later.”
The calm and low voice didn’t hide the cruel truth hidden behind those words. An attentive silence fell over the room, creating a peaceful atmosphere that surprised Sho. He lowered his head, and surreptitiously took a glance at the killer in his back, startled to meet his accomplice smile.
“Madam, your thoughts?” the Kashira asked diplomatically without leaving his chair.
“Well, I guess we’ll…do as you want, Kashira,” she blushed slightly, her defeatist tone barely hiding her disappointment when she had to admit the incompetence of her own son in the matter. Oguri Shun was a leader in the core and Masaki couldn’t compare.
“You can take your leave,” she commanded to Nino and his shatei.
“Madam, if you allow me, I’d like to introduce myself to your new man…,” Oguri-son said, walking toward the two men. “I’m Oguri Shun, I don’t think we have met before.”
Sho took a glance at Nino, seeking for help. It was the very first time he met the heads of the organization and he didn’t expect such a friendly behavior from a man Nino called a machine.
Nino arched an eyebrow, elbowed his shatei to make him move and Oguri laughed genuinely.
“I see, you learned to be obedient, that's good.”
“Excuse me, I’m Sakurai Sho, Ninomiya-san’s shatei.”
“Yes, yes, I see.”
“Nice to meet you.”
“Nice to meet you too.”
They bowed once again and before getting out, Sho thought that it was impossible to refuse to obey to such a man. Not because his amiability made a weak man out of him, on the contrary, Oguri's self-confidence and his elegance turned him into a leader. When Sho thought about Masaki-san and their first encounter, when he had a girl between his thighs, he clearly couldn’t handle the comparison.
Lost in his thoughts, he noticed too late that Nino had moved far away already. He ran to catch up to him, relieved that the name of his sister hadn’t been evoked in Nino’s report. Not because he didn’t trust Nino, he trusted him with his life but he was afraid he could crock up under the pressure. Nino’s loyalty definitely won his indefectible respect.
“Nino, will you dine at my place tonight?”
“I can’t.”
“You -you won’t?!” Since the day Nino met Sho’s precious sister, he had joined dinner almost every day with them, pretending to follow the cop but he couldn’t fool Sho. He noticed the way Nino looked at his sister and he hated it.
“I just told you I won’t dine at your place, what don’t you understand? Tonight we’ll party together.”
“You and me?”
“Yup.”
“What are we celebrating?”
“The fact that we can grab our glass of sake with our ten fingers.”
“I see but…Mee-na will worry.”
“Fuck Sho, she’s your sister, not your wife or your mother, leave her alone.”
“You’re right,” Sho said after a second look at Nino. “Where are we going?”
“To the club, where else?”
Sho smiled and they took the so familiar road. They sat down at their table and the usual waitress brought them two whisky.
“Do we have to talk, Nino?”
“About what?”
“Generally speaking, you always bring me here when you have to talk to me.”
“I made of you a man of habit.” Nino scowled at Sho.
“I wouldn’t say that…repetition is reassuring somehow.”
“I never asked you about the factory or about your family.”
“And I’m grateful for that.”
“But I risked my ass for you, so you have to explain, I don’t like grey zones.”
Sho smiled seductively, “If you answer one question before.”
Nino startled. “Are you…are you bargaining with me?!”
“Yes, Sir, I am.”
“Stop smirking, you frigging brat. What do you want to know?”
“Earlier, Madam talked about the Kansai’s squad, what’s this?”
“I’ll show you as soon as you spat out your story.”
“Very well. My father was Japanese. He was a soldier sent to Korea with the army of occupation. Out there he met my mother and fell in love. She left her family and accepted to be banned from society to be with him. My sister was born and one year later, I followed. When my father had been called to go back home, my mother followed him. But when she arrived in Japan with us, she discovered he had a wife and a family. He married a woman before his departure for the war and she was pregnant when he left. My mother became a servant for a rich family of Tokyo, she worked in a factory and it destroyed her. She died two years later,” Sho told this brother.
“And since then, you’re alone with Mee-na?”
“Yes, we stayed together. You know, Mee-na is…she blames Japanese people, she’s proud. People are harassing her because of her traditional outfit but she refuses to give up on it.”
“You entered the clan for her?”
“Yeah. You accept everybody, no matter where you come from, all it counts is merit. If I’m a yakuza, people will respect me and stop harassing her, she's not that strong.”
“And you didn’t tell her?”
“She’d kill me if she knew, she thinks I'm working in a factory.”
“I got that. And I get you too, now.”
“And now, your part of the deal?”
“Oh, the squad….not sure it’s a fair deal though. I’m gonna show you, come with me,”
Nino leaped onto his feet and Sho stuck to him as he climbed the stairs, leading to the girl’s level once again.
A big guy was climbing down, his face red and sated, tearing off a pout of disgust from Sho. They lift the curtain and Sho immediately felt that the atmosphere had changed. He heard music, a dizzily and repetitive music coming from the end of the corridor. A man was leaning against the wall, a cigarette in the corner of his mouth, his pants unzipped and a smile curving his lips.
“Nino…it’s been a long time.”
“Right, Ryo-kun. I’d like to introduce you my shatei, Sakurai Sho.”
The man laughed out loud, he seemed to be pretty smashed already. “Oh, you won a shatei, you?”
“Fuck, stop it already…everybody seems so astonished!”
“You came to see your old friends? Want to lend us your shatei?”
“Certainly not! What are you doing?”
“Come in. You’ll see for yourself.”
Nino pushed the door open and nodded his head to let Sho enter. It was dark inside and Sho had a hard time distinguishing the shadows that were moving slowly. But when he got used to the darkness, he stepped back. He eyed the naked women wearing animals masks lying on the floor, their limbs entangled with men’s, some of them completely dressed, others naked, some of them wearing masks too.
“The smallest is the Chief of the squad,” Nino whispered at Sho’s ear pointing at a man holding a cat-woman in leash while she was masturbating a fat old man who was groaning shamelessly. “Subaru. The two at the back, fucking the mayor’s wife are Tacchon and Yasu, behind them, Maru is getting whipped by the Deputy. This is the girlfriend of the fat guy here, she's giving a head at Ikuta and last but not least, the guy hidden there…,” Sho narrowed his eyes to see him, “is Yokoyama You and he’s taking pictures.”
“Fuck…”
“That’s the word. Madam employs them for some special missions, these orgies among other things. Got it?”
Sho nodded slowly, then stepped back to exit the room where no one noticed their presence. In the process he bumped into Ryo who was putting back his mask after a quick wink.
“Sho, you okay?” Nino was smiling, imagining the face of the prude shatei witnessing this decadent show.
Sho turned around and what Nino read in his eyes was far from disgust. He opened his mouth but before he could speak a word, was nailed against the wall, Sho’s tongue forcing his lips to part. Sho’s hips were grinding his and Nino could totally sense the measure of his excitement. Sho was so hard…
Startled at first, confused, Nino stiffened under the sudden kiss but Sho didn’t seem to care about his lack of responsiveness, totally lost in his burning desire. He slid a leg between Nino’s thighs and when he fell on the floor, violently punched in the chin, he didn’t react. Nino was glaring at him, his fists still clenched.
“It’s your fucking lucky day, I don’t have my knuckles on me! Try again and I’ll tear your balls off. You hear me?”
Sho nodded, grabbing his aching chin and he watched Nino leaving the corridor.
